Image Photographer Ofer Hajayov Presents: How Do You Shoot a Good Portfolio?

Ofer Hajayov

A photo session is something you should prepare for a little, much like preparing for an audition without a casting director.
The photos will often determine whether people linger on your images before an audition, and what it is about you that catches the eye.
So let’s not take this lightly — my goal in such a session is to capture you authentically and with variety.

So what really matters:

1. The first step after you’ve scheduled a session is to clear the time in your calendar.
2. To plan the styles together – a period shoot, stand-up, a childlike character for a children’s series, character shots, or a commercial advertisement.
3. It’s best not to draw unnecessary attention with clothes that grab focus: shirts with strong prints, clothing with stripes, dots, or overly strong colors will pull the gaze to the clothing and not to the most important part — your face! My recommendation is to choose simple, uncomplicated clothing, among them: a plain black t-shirt, a button-down shirt in a solid color (not white), comfortable jeans, a jacket that flatters you, one period outfit, tailored attire, the most youthful-looking outfit, and one current garment that you truly love. You can always enlist a friend and borrow that garment you loved just for the shoot. (A small tip: try not to arrive in wrinkled clothes.) Women can vary their attire across the age range to look slightly younger or older — hair up, down, etc. Dresses can vary too — a summer dress, an evening dress, and so on.
4. For men with a short or long beard, I recommend bringing shaving gear so the casting director can see the face without a beard (read more about actor representation).
5. You can also bring eyeglasses.
6. Women — you can vary more with a summer dress, an evening dress, or tailored attire.

During the session, remember this isn’t a fashion portfolio or an Instagram shoot.
Bring yourself, net — no more and no less; this isn’t a theatrical portfolio, but a clean one.
The camera will love you when you’re you and not someone else.
The casting director will know how to recognize that —
that’s her specialty.

In the next chapter — “Everyone is photogenic from birth.”
